What Brings Me to Copywriting for Green Technology and Environmental Companies

Growing up, I learned a love of nature from mom, something that came easy in my home state of Maine.

I also had an early introduction to conservation, starting with my first trip to Baxter State Park when I was ten years old. I remember being awed at the effort Gov. Percival Baxter spent to preserve Mt. Katahdin and the surrounding lands so they would be kept “forever wild.”

A few years later, I had a more direct experience with conservation when my dad helped start Loon Echo Land Trust. I had the opportunity to watch it evolve and be part of it from the early stages. It was my first experience of seeing how a small group of committed people can make a difference. I found it inspiring.

Choosing a technical career path

Much as I loved the environment, in the mid-1990s I didn’t know how I could have a career related to that. I also didn’t pursue my interest in writing because I’d collected enough rejection letters to know it would be hard to make a living as a writer.

Instead, I majored in Computer Science, and it ended up being a good choice. I liked the logic of it, and the systematic approach made sense to me.

I especially enjoyed my role in Product Management at a software company in Portland, Maine. It allowed me to use my writing skills by turning complex healthcare regulations into clear requirements for our software solutions.

Looking for more meaningful work

But I started attending more meetings and doing less of the things I liked. And as I got older, it became more important to me to do work with a deeper meaning and purpose.

When I learned about copywriting and content writing, I got excited by the possibility of doing more with writing. Even better, I realized I could focus on a field that would help me leave the world a better place.

Which brings me to writing for green technology and environmental-related companies. It’s the perfect synthesis of my background, my love of writing, and my lifelong passion for helping the environment.
